Start with the business requirements
Before specifying cable types, map current and expected network endpoints: desks, access points, IP phones, security devices and equipment rooms. Allow capacity for future moves and expansion.
Site conditions matter. Existing ceilings, conduits, fire barriers, equipment locations and operational hours may determine installation methods and phasing.
Cat6 or Cat6A?
Cat6 can support gigabit Ethernet over standard channel lengths and certain higher-speed uses over shorter distances, depending on conditions. Cat6A is designed to support 10 Gigabit Ethernet over a 100-metre channel when correctly installed and tested.
Select based on expected bandwidth, power-over-Ethernet requirements, cable density, pathway space, budget and the relevant project specification—not simply the highest category available.
- Use components and connectors compatible with the selected cable category.
- Maintain appropriate separation from electrical power and respect bend radius and pulling tension.
- Specify fire performance and pathway materials to meet applicable project requirements.
Design the rack and labeling scheme
A serviceable installation needs logical patch-panel layouts, suitable cable management, ventilation, access clearances and enough rack space for switches, power and future growth.
Label both ends consistently and maintain an as-built port schedule. Good documentation reduces troubleshooting time during future office moves or service changes.
Test and hand over
Ask for appropriate permanent-link or channel test results against the selected cabling standard. Visual neatness alone does not confirm network performance.
The handover pack should include labeled cable schedules, test reports, updated drawings where applicable and maintenance recommendations.
