Define the fiber application first
Fiber optic systems are often used for backbone links, longer runs, high-bandwidth connections and electrically challenging environments. Start by identifying endpoints, link lengths, required speeds and physical routes.
Choose single-mode or multimode fiber in line with equipment optics, distance and the project design. Connector type and fiber count should also be specified early.
Protect the cable route
Plan pathways, cabinets, splice closures and termination points before pulling cable. Maintain appropriate bend radius, pulling tension, protection and slack management according to the cable manufacturer's specifications.
For outdoor or exposed routes, evaluate environmental protection and the correct cable construction. Document the route so future maintenance does not risk accidental damage.
Fusion splicing and termination
Fusion splicing joins prepared fiber ends using controlled heat. Quality depends on accurate stripping, cleaning, cleaving, splice protection and technician technique.
Termination equipment such as optical distribution frames helps organize fiber pairs, provide strain relief and simplify fault isolation. Keep labels consistent from end to end.
Testing and acceptance
Inspection and cleaning of connectors are essential. Depending on the link specification, acceptance may include insertion-loss testing and optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) measurements.
Test from appropriate reference conditions and keep results with route details, splice maps and fiber numbering. Not every project needs identical tests; agree on acceptance criteria before installation.
- Record measured loss and compare with the agreed loss budget.
- Label ports, cores, enclosures and patching consistently.
- Provide as-built documentation and equipment handover details.
